Yale SOM Essay Question: Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. (500 words maximum)

Yale is world famous as the “mecca” of social responsibility. For any MBA applicant who wants to save the world from poverty, illiteracy, HIV/AIDS and so on, Yale SOM is the ideal place. It will provide you a perfect ecosystem to acquire the knowledge and competence to make your dream come true!

Now first let us understand what kind of commitment differentiate you from hundreds of other Yale applicants. True commitments entail some amount of self-sacrifice. Have you till date taken up a cause and endured lot of hardships and sacrifice to do some greater good for your organization, or any non-profit or may be for your family & friends? Have you ever put yourself at risk to accomplish things that would benefit someone else? For instance, did you take care of an ailing friend who was battling cancer? Or, have you ever committed yourself to step up to the challenge to reduce product defects in your company? Or, have you committed to spend time every week with orphan kids in order to bring a smile in their face? Or, have you plunged into entrepreneurship and committed yourself to make your dream start-up successful? Or, have you taken up the military uniform to make your country safe from foreign enemies?

Dig deep into your personal and professional life and pen down five to six major commitments that you have made. Evaluate the risks that you have faced or the hardships you endured to obtain the the results. Thereafter, choose the one in which you took the highest risk or endured the biggest obstacle to achieve your objectives.

Narrate your story elaborately with suitable anecdotes. What obstacles did you face? How did you overcome those challenges? What did you learn in the process? How did that crucial experience change you as a human being? Tell your story of commitment, provide context, explain the challenges faced, and finally the results achieved.



Yale SOM Application Video Component:

Yale hasn’t posted the video essay question on the website this year. The video questions vary from applicant to applicant. So we suggest that you thoroughly practice speaking into a webcam time and again. At first, you might have goose bumps as none of us are accustomed to speak without any human feedback. But then later as your nerves settle down, you might land up mastering the art. Google some of the common interview questions and pen down answers that can that can be verbally delivered in 60-120 seconds. Remember, stress would do nothing but send you in a no man’s land! Just imagine you are speaking to an admission officer instead of a camera and deliver your well-thought out answers adorned with a confident smile on your face.

The Yale School of Management is located at Whitney Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut, and is the graduate business school of Yale University. The business school campus is housed in the Edward P. Evans Hall. With a small class size, Yale offers a close-knit student body and a high degree of integration with Yale University. Hence, students have the ability to take elective courses across the university. Yale is the mecca for humanities and social science. Admission to Yale is quite competitive. It enrolled 348 students in the Class of 2019. The median GMAT score is 730, and the middle 80% of the scores ranges from 690 to 760. The median undergraduate GPA is 3.69 and it ranges between 3.3 and 3.9.

In the Class of 2019, 45% are international citizens, dual U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, women comprise 43% and 27% are U.S. minorities.

The student body is extremely diverse in terms of professional and academic background. 30% of the students hold undergraduate majors in humanities and social science, while 23% majored in business, 21% majored in engineering/computer science and 15% pursued economics.

In terms of placement, the median starting salary of the Class of 2017 was $124,900 and average signing bonus was record high $33,000. 48% of students joined consulting, 27% went into finance/accounting, and 8% into general management.
